Yumie Takagi

Yumie is a katana-wielding Japanese nun. She is a fanatical Catholic and seems to genuinely enjoy killing people with her almost superhuman sword skills. She knows various Batto-jutsu (sword drawing) techniques and is adept enough to kill even from outside the room where her victim is, but is quite capable of smashing men's heads into walls with her bare hands as well. Yumiko has commented how hard it is for her to "get Yumie to sleep" after she has been provoked into action. Her personalities switch places, either by duelling for control inside of their mind, or a strong blow. Heinkel uses this technique to awaken the latent Yumie and have her brutally kill several terrorists in the first volume of the manga's extra Crossfire feature.

In Hellsing chapter 74 Relics, she attacks Walter, enraged after seeing him desecrating Father Anderson's remains. Although moving extremely swiftly, she is outmatched and cut into pieces by Walter's wires. Heinkel is hysterical and aims her guns at Walter, only to be shot and wounded by the Captain. Yumie makes an appearance in OVA 5 and will most likely make another in future OVA instalments.

The character of Yumie originally appeared in Crossfire as the violent alter-ego of Yumiko Takagi, a bespectacled and pacifist nun. Despite nearly identical character traits, the Yumie in Hellsing and the Yumie/Yumiko of Crossfire are two entirely separate characters, as Crossfire is a separate story and not part of the Hellsing canon.

Note: the Japanese characters for "Yumiko" (由美子) and "Yumie" (由美江) differ only on the last syllable. Many people tend to make the mistake of calling her berserker personality Yumi (with two syllables) instead of the correct name, Yumie (three syllables). Yumi (由美), Yumiko (由美子) and Yumie (由美江) are all different names. Yumi, however, forms base name for both Yumiko and Yumie. Yumi, as written, is composed of the kanji for "Significance/Reason" and "Beauty". The name 'Yumiko' adds the character for "Child" to the end (子 ko) — which seems to be metaphorically symbolic of that half of her personality, since she's innocent and childlike in her Yumiko form. The name Yumieadds the character for "Inlet" (江 e).

Yumiko is a shy, quiet nun who gets easily frightened, whereas Yumie provides raw, unfettered violence with her nigh-superhuman strength, fearlessness and fearsome katana skills that make her the ideal partner to Heinkel. Maxwell often berates the pair, not because of their excessive violence, but rather because their activities as assassins, mentioned as to have been dressed in the raiments of the Catholic Church, indicating a connection to the Vatican and by proxy to Iscariot, which is supposed to be a secret agency outside normal knowledge. She is also the only character of Japanese ethnicity in Hellsing.

Heinkel Wolfe

Heinkel is a pistol wielding assassin for the Iscariot organization, partners with Yumie, and dresses like a priest, though she is technically a nun.

She acts as a bodyguard for Enrico Maxwell in Hellsing volumes 4 to 5 and is later seen, along with Yumie, among the brigade of Catholic priests sent to apprehend Integra under Father Anderson's leadership. In Chapter 74, she is shot in the face by The Captain. The bullet entered through her left cheek, exited through the right, and severely damaged the right side of her face. Heinkel is bewildered as the Captain gestures to her with his head, which she interprets as 'stay out of the way'. He tosses her a first-aid kit, and Heinkel realizes that the Captain spared her life when he could have easily killed her. After seeing Yumie's remains, a bandaged and enraged Heinkel swears revenge on Walter, and takes a sniper rifle from the small group of remaining Iscariot priests. While Walter is distracted by Alucard's remains, Heinkel shoots him through the chest with her sniper rifle.

Heinkel makes a couple of small non-speaking appearances in Hellsing OVA 4, shooting a corrupt priest under Maxwell's order and later aiming her pistols at Schrödinger when he unexpectedly materializes at the Hellsing-Vatican meeting with the Queen of England. Heinkel makes her full appearance in OVA 5 and will most likely appear in future OVA installments.

Recent remarks made by Hirano in a December 2005 issue of "Puff" magazine, in which he was interviewed about the upcoming Hellsing OVA series and Hellsing in general, have shed new insight into Heinkel and her curiously androgynous appearance. It seems she is "neither male nor female"; possibly intersexual, though given Hirano's frequent ironic remarks, the validity of this statement is disputed. Note that the obviously female Heinkel Wolfe in Crossfire is a completely different character, and the two shouldn't be confused with each other (though in one one of the chapter covers Maxwell expresses surprise to see that she was a woman). Although the voice of Heinkel is played by Mitsuki Saiga in Hellsing OVA 5, there is still curiosity among fans towards Heinkel's sex due to the suspiciously masculine tone in Saiga's voice for this role.

In the final chapter, Heinkel seems to have become a regenerator, replacing Anderson as Iscariot's trump card. Coincidentally, she develops a feud with Seras Victoria, much like their mentors Alucard and Anderson. She still has the wound inflicted by the Captain (Much like Anderson's scar) and has not aged over 40 years, implying she has become a regenerator like Anderson. It is unknown if she still wields pistols, orbayonets like Anderson. It's revealed that as of now they are too weak after the 9th Crusade, and that the next crusade will have to take at least some centuries, which enrages Heinkel as she wanted to be part of taking down Hellsing, despite knowing that it would be impossible if they acted now. This would seem to imply that the incident in London made her lose her cool-headed personality and develop a much more violent and impulsive one, like the ones of her dead comrades Yumie and Anderson. This is further suggested by her behavior after being shot by the Captain and shooting Walter through the heart; she becomes more enraged and fanatical.

Enrico Maxwell

Maxwell is the fanatical leader of the Vatican's Special Section XIII, the Iscariot Organization. Enrico controls his organization with an iron fist. However, his seemingly blind devotion to his mission often makes his underling Alexander Anderson question his motivations. During the standoff between Alucard and the Millennium led police force in Rio de Janero, Anderson watches the scene unfold on the news with a sense of indignation and fury, while Enrico seems to revel in the ensuing violence. Enrico also has a bitter rivalry with Integra Hellsing, Bureau Director of the Hellsing Organization, due to their similar occupations and differing ideologies.

Enrico seems to suffer from a facial tic characterized by repeated wincing of his left eye, much to the amusement of fans. He also appears to drool whilst he sleeps.

In the manga, Enrico is promoted to the rank of bishop, and then very quickly toarchbishop in the space of two volumes by the Pope. He is given command of the remnants of the Christian armies from the Holy Crusades, which consists of over 3,000 knights clad in medieval armor and wielding an assortment of heavy weapons with which to attack Millennium. However, he became so drunk with power that he decided London'sProtestant survivors also deserved to die, and commanded his men to kill them as well. Eventually, Alucard's undead army overran his own. Enrico's helicopter was shot down by Rip Van Winkle (who at this point was a familiar under the command of Alucard), but it was Anderson who broke the armored glass protecting him, leaving Enrico to be impaled by Alucard's men. Anderson commented that Enrico had become drunk with power and rather fought for his own goals and pleasure rather than for the sake of the Vatican. With this act, Anderson felt that Enrico had become an enemy of the Vatican and needed to be killed.

After Enrico's death, Anderson has a flashback. As a small child, Enrico lived at Ferdinand Luke's, an orphanage outside Rome where Anderson lived and worked. His parents had abandoned him, likely because he was the 'son of a mistress'. Though Anderson tried to raise him as well as he could, Enrico remained angry and spiteful. He grew determined to become someone that people couldn't look down on. Enrico's determination proved to be his hamartia, as he ended up dying the same way that he had lived; alone

Alexander anderson

In terms of facial features, Alexander Anderson has short, spikey blond hair (grey in the manga), green eyes (blue in the manga), a heavy-set squared jaw, and constant stubble. He also has a large, wedge-shaped scar on his left cheek. In the first televised anime series, he was depicted with prominent, sharp canines, possibly to heighten his resemblance to a vampire and make him a symbolic counterpart to Alucard, the "tame monster" of the Hellsing Organization. Anderson is quite an imposing man, being very tall (slightly taller than Alucard, who himself is over 2 meters in height) and lean with broad shoulders. He wears round glasses, a large grey cassock (has purple trim in the TV series and white trim with blue interior in the OVA), grey pants (black in the OVA and white in the TV series), black boots, a black shirt (black with blue trim in the OVA and white in the TV series), a clerical collar (absent from both of the anime series), white gloves, and a silver cross (which often glows gold in the OVA) around his neck. On his gloves, there are inscriptions written across the crosses drawn on the back:

• For the right hand, Jesus Christ is in Heaven
• For the left hand, Speak with Dead (later changed to Speak with the Dead)

In the manga, these inscriptions change sometimes, in Anderson's later appearances his gloves read Iscariot Section XIII, the organization to which Anderson belongs.

Alexander Anderson normally appears as a calm and collected priest; he works at an orphanage in the manga and OVA and acts very kindly towards the children under his care. During battles, however, he reveals a darker side.

Anderson carries an obsession for what appears to be his "crusade," and compulsively quotes passages of the Holy Bible as he speaks. He is extremely determined to achieve his end, usually by whatever means necessary.

In battle, he is merciless and almost unstoppable due to his abilities. He has a habit of hissing during fights, and often loses all control of himself much like Alucard. Despite this, he can stop himself and focus on his mission.

Walter C. Dornez

He was born in either late 1929 or 1930. The place of his birth is unknown. Walter has lived with the Hellsing family for perhaps his entire life. It is known that Walter was educated at Balliol College, Oxford (where Arthur Hellsing and Sir Hugh Irons were educated) after World War II, and read philosophy and politics. Hellsing: The Dawn records Walter and Alucard (in the body of a little girl) storming Millennium's base during World War II in Warsaw, Poland, and putting an end to their first attempt at creating an army of artificial vampires.[1]

In modern times, Walter serves primarily as Integra's butler and also makes special weapons for use by Hellsing's vampires, Alucard and Seras Victoria. However, he is still one of the organization's most capable operatives, wielding high-velocity monomolecular wires with incredible skill and precision. Walter's efficiency and power was so great that he earned the nickname the "Angel of Death," and even at the age of 69, Walter can still rip his way through hordes of the undead. In the manga, he also helps Integra make numerous difficult choices that Alucard occasionally poses, such as whether or not to kill innocent humans in order to achieve mission objectives.

His overall attitude during his pre-vampiric time seemed to be one of proud resignation to the fact that he was becoming old, and was not as effective a fighter as he once had been. When Alucard tells him how growing old must be terrible, Walter tells him that "If we cannot have our pride with prosperity, then we should reject such prosperity", enforcing the position that Walter is proud of being human, and would not embrace the prosperity of vampiric immortality because it would mean sacrificing that pride. Ultimately however, it seems that his fear of becoming useless overcame his sense of pride, as his ultimate wish is to become "a shinigami [God of Death] in body, mind and soul". To this end, he attempts to destroy Alucard in order to prove his capabilities to himself.

Integra Hellsing

Born into the prestigious and mysterious Hellsing family, Integra has been sheltered and educated all her life to take the place of her father, Sir Arthur Hellsing, as Bureau Director of the Hellsing Organization. Integra's mother does not appear in her flashbacks, suggesting either that Integra never met the woman or that she died when Integra was very young. When she was 12 years old, Integra's father passed away and entrusted her with their family's mission to lead the Royal Protestant Knights and protect England, and asked his brother, Richard, to aid her.

Almost immediately after Arthur’s death, Richard Hellsing, jealous of Integra for inheriting the family headship, attempted to hunt her down and kill her. Integra escaped her traitorous uncle and managed to reach a dungeon in the mansion's sub levels, where her father had said she would find her salvation. Hoping to find a knight in shining armor, she stumbled across an old, dried-out corpse, instead. Richard found her, cornered her, and shot her in her shoulder, spilling her blood across the floor of the room. The corpse, actually a vampire whom Arthur had imprisoned 20 years earlier, awoke and licked up Integra's blood. Rejuvenated, it proceeded to kill her persecutors, thus saving her. Richard, desperate, attempted to kill Integra one last time, but the vampire blocked his bullet. Picking up a gun, Integra shot and killed her uncle, becoming the last descendant of the Hellsing bloodline. The vampire, whose name was Alucard, became her loyal servant.

Not long after, Integra was knighted and introduced to Vice Admiral Sir Shelby Penwood, a former friend of her father. Upon seeing Integra for the first time, Sir Penwood said that she was far too young to fulfill her duty. He revised his opinion during the actual storyline, in which he admitted that it was an honor to have met and served with her in his farewell message, prior to his death. His eventual sacrifice to destroy countless Millennium footsoldiers during the London invasion was just one of the many examples that helped solidify Integra's resolution about humanity's worth and continue her duty.

Young Integra was portrayed as a timid but willful girl seemingly intimidated by the supernatural who was forced to grow up abuptly when her treacherous uncle tried to kill her. When Alucard became her servant, she grew more confident and comfortable with her position as head of the Hellsing family and a Knight of the Round Table. Much like Seras Victoria, Integra experiences a coming of age, gaining experience and losing her remaining innocence as events unfold and the war begins, transforming into a leader with an iron resolution who does not flinch at the first signs of danger and who gains wisdom through dire losses and betrayals. The Major recognizes her change from a "beautiful Fräulein" (he goes so far as to apologize for calling her this) to the most dangerous enemy who stands in the way of his plans, calling her forth into his Zeppelin

Seras Victoria

Seras was originally a police officer who, along with the rest of her squad, was sent into the village of Cheddar, where a vampire disguised as (or possibly was formerly) a priest had taken control of the town and turned its inhabitants into ghouls (zombies). She was taken hostage by that priest vampire, who used her as a shield from Alucard, she was then given a "choice" by Alucard after shooting her through one of her lungs in order to kill the vampire: she could either die as a human, or be turned into a vampire herself, and live. She chose to live, and so Alucard turned her into a vampire, her virgin blood allowed her to successfully make the transition from human to vampire (non-virgin or same-sex vampire victims become ghouls- this aspect is only present in the original manga and the OVA series however; in the televised series, vampirism is simply determined by the will of the drinking vampire, and possibly by the victim being willing to make the change, and vampires can raise any newly dead humans nearby as ghouls). She was employed by the Hellsing Organization immediately afterwards, and it supplies all her needs such as sufficient blood for consumption and shelter secure from any daylight exposure. Seras is a strong willed woman, and apparently had always been since her childhood which is confirmed through flashbacks.

Seras Victoria is often considered a tomboy; a very brave, strong-willed and heroic young woman who often rejects following orders of her master that cross with her personal beliefs. However, she is a loyal and trustworthy soldier who will diligently follow the orders of her commander, provided said commander has proven his or her worth. Her level of maturity in comparison to the other characters is somewhat questionable; she seems to be the child the others could not be, yet possessing a sort of worldly maturity and superficial intelligence that most other characters lack, as well as a sort of 'nature winning against nurture' mentality, as opposed to most of other characters. She's the "light that stands out from the darkness" (quoting Kouta Hirano from a recent interview). Her actual age is not known but she is generally believed to be at least 18 and is popularly believed to be 19 or 20. The most possible is the latter, since she had already joined the police force at the beginning of the manga, making the age of 18 unlikely.

Seras's father, also a police officer, "got in too deep" during an undercover mission. The group he had infiltrated traced him back to his home and brutally murdered him. Her mother hid Seras in a closet and then walked out to face the criminals, who immediately killed her as well. A distraught Seras charged out and stabbed one of the criminals in the eye with a fork before being shot in the gut and thrown against a bloodstained wall. The flashback ends with Seras seeing glimpses of the criminals having sex with her mother's corpse. It was also shown that, after the ordeal in her orphanage, she threw a stone at another child for taking a toy she was playing with. Near the end of the flashback, Seras is told that she may be relocated if her violence continues, as the orphanage may not be able to care for her any longer. There, she expresses her strongest wish - to become a police officer.

Alucard

Volume 8 gives brief flashbacks of his human days. It is not explicitly shown or stated how he became a vampire, but there is a scene showing him drinking blood from the floor before an executioner.^[1]

The series mentions the events of Bram Stoker's Dracula, but deviate at the point of Dracula's defeat. In Hellsing, he was staked in the heart but not destroyed. It is unknown if he was forced into servitude or was willing, but he became a servant of the Van Helsing family. He, along with a young Walter C. Dornez, were sent to Warsaw, Poland to stop Millennium's vampire production program.^[2] Integra's father eventually imprisoned Alucard in a dungeon in the Hellsing manor, as he believed the vampire was too powerful to be used frequently.^[3] After 20 years of imprisonment, Integra's blood awakened and resuscitated Alucard. He rescued Integra from her traitorous uncle and became her servant.^[4]

Alucard taunts and belittles his opponents, allowing them to inflict wounds before healing and retaliating, as shown within pages of his first appearance in the manga.^[5] He longs for battle.^[6]

He expresses admiration for some humans, calling Integra's order to kill "splendid"^[7] and the determination of his rival, Alexander Anderson, to destroy him an example of the "fantastic" and "magnificent" qualities of humans.^[8] He recognizes Anderson as a parallel to himself, and pities him.^[9]

Alucard expresses extreme disgust with the vampires he hunts, especially when they kill without purpose. When commenting on the "Bonnie and Clyde" early in the story, he lists the two vampires' pointless killing in his catalog of how pathetic they are.^[10]

Alucard is immortal and does not age.^[11] Other characters are hard pressed to severely wound him, and even when he receives extreme damage, he simply reforms.^[12] He cannot be destroyed via decapitation or being staked through the heart.^[13] He exhibits incredible accuracy when firing his twin large caliber handguns, and is capable of accurately shooting targets while looking the other way.^[14][15] He can physically tear humans apart with ease and move faster than the eye can see.^[16] He is seen passing through walls^[17] and moving up vertical surfaces.^[18]He shapeshifts into various forms, including bats,^[19] insects,^[20] demonic dogs,^[21] amorphous masses of darkness,^[22] and other humanoid forms.^[23][24] He can communicate with telepathy at least with Seras^[16] and can hypnotize other characters.^[7] He can absorb memories through blood^[25] and is immune or resistant to sunlight.^[26]
